The time has come - the Valkyrie has descended onto PS5 and PS4! We couldn’t be more thrilled for you to play it.

VALKYRIE ELYSIUM releases today for PS5 and PS4 and will launch for Steam on November 11, 2022. This brand new action RPG puts you in command of a newly created Valkyrie who’s charged by Odin to purify souls of the dead and save a world teetering on the edge of oblivion.

No pressure then.

It’s a wonderful game with a fascinating story, a uniquely melancholy vibe, and some very rewarding combat. Here are seven reasons you should be excited to play it:

1. It’s set a unique world packed with fascinating lore

VALKYRIE ELYSIUM has a richly imaginative setting that takes inspiration from Norse mythology.

The game takes elements that you may recognize from recent movies or games, such as figures like Odin and realms like Midgard, and fuses them with original storytelling to create something that’s extremely distinct - an off-beat, thematically rich setting that’s quite unlike anything else you’ll play this year.

It’s also a game that lore-fiends will love. As you explore the desolate world, undergoing the throes of Ragnarok, you’ll discover many fascinating facts about the world that was.

From Hollow Blossoms, that reveal the thoughts of a once thriving populace, to lost souls with unfinished business, this is a world that rewards those who explore its many facets.

2. Combat is simple to pick up, but has tons of depth

There isn’t much left alive in VALKYRIE ELYSIUM’s world - the memories of people who once lived in these lands have transformed into blue flowers that dot the landscape. Valkyrie can learn of what happened in the past by reading and unravelling the messages left behind by their souls.

But some dark and twisted souls linger, becoming the undead. These dangerous, albeit visually striking, creatures must be purified and you’re just the Valkyrie to do it. Don’t expect them make it easy though - they’ll fight back.

Fortunately, you’re more than equipped to deal with these threats. Combat in VALKYRIE ELYSIUM is fast, fluid and incredibly fun. The real-time action battle system is incredibly easy to get to grips with yet has enormous depth.

For example, the Valkyrie has access to multiple weapon types, each with its own distinct combos. These have enormous utility in battle - some layer on multiple strikes for tons of damage, others are quick hits that let you get in and out before your foe can react.

You also have access to Divine Arts, which let you hit groups of enemies with lightning bolts, heal your wounds, bring foes together, unleash powerful melee attacks, set enemies ablaze and much more.

Add enemy weaknesses to different elements and weapons, and even more depth from your summonable Einherjar (more on them in a bit) and you get wildly entertaining, constantly evolving battles that never get old!

3. Einherjar are awesome… and fascinating

As you explore Midgard, you’ll encounter Einherjar - souls of fallen fighters who will join you on your quest to stave off the apocalypse. These recruitable warriors are compelling characters who will help you in and out of battle.

For example, the Knight Eygon has powerful lightning attacks, and can cleave boulders with his massive sword. Cypher, on the other hand, is a skilled archer. His ice attacks are perfect for giving fire breathing Dracos the cold shoulder, and he can even make ice platforms for Valkyrie to jump on.

You’ll meet multiple Einherjar over the course of the story, each with their own talents to bring to the party. And as you explore, you may discover hidden relics that reveal more about their troubled pasts…

4. The Soul Chain takes gameplay to another level

The Valkyrie has access to many different abilities, but I have to single out the Soul Chain because I absolutely adore it! With a press of a button, the Valkyrie can fire out a spiritual tether that connects to enemies or special points in the environment and pulls her towards it.

The Soul Chain keeps combat flowing, letting you zip between enemies in seconds, ensuring the action never slows down. It’s fantastic for exploration too, letting you get up to platforms and cross large gaps with real style.

But most importantly, it’s just plain fun, and combined with VALKYRIE ELYSIUM’s already satisfying movement and combo systems, makes for a game that feels great to play!

5. The bosses are weird, wonderful and waiting to test your resolve

In true RPG style, you’ll eventually face off against some powerful bosses… and some truly terrifying ones at that!

And we do mean that - some of these creatures are gloriously grotesque. From lumbering giants to multi-limbed monstrosities, these opponents also have some of the most imaginative visual designs you’ll find in an RPG.

They’re equally unnerving to face in battle too. These mighty creatures are designed to be a real test of your skills and battle strategy - you’ll have to react to their powerful attacks and exploit their weaknesses to give yourself the openings you need.

In short, each boss is a very satisfying challenge. Of course, if you’re someone who likes an easier ride, or only cares about the story, there are multiple difficulty levels so you can tailor the challenge to your liking!

6. There’s a lot of scope for customization

There are lot of ways to build up your powers in VALKYRIE ELYSIUM. Weapons, Einherjar, Arts and the Valkyrie herself can all be upgraded, giving them extra strength, new abilities and much more.

By defeating bosses, finding hidden chests and destroying parts of the scenery, you can earn magic gems of different colors. These can be used to purchase additional upgrades - though what you spend them on is up to you.

Do you sacrifice strengthening a sword to give Valkyrie a new ability, for example? Or do you take that amazing new weapon combo and boost your health later? It adds some interesting decision making into the upgrade path!

The skills and Einherjar you equip can also have a dramatic effect on gameplay. There are so many different combinations available, and there’s a lot of fun to be had experimenting with different loadouts - just bear in mind that what works in one area might not be so effective in another…

7. It has a beautiful, reactive soundtrack

The VALKYRIE series is known for its superlative soundtracks, and VALKYRIE ELYSIUM may have one of the best yet.

Series composer Motoi Sakuraba returns for this new game and delivers a musical tour de force - a sweeping soundtrack that runs the gamut from melancholy melodies to bombastic battle themes.

The music shifts as you play - a gentle song that plays as you’re exploring will seamlessly transition into a rousing action track, and then back again without missing a beat. It’s simply masterful, and if you’re someone who appreciates video game music, you won’t want to miss it!
