DRAGON QUEST: The Adventure of Dai was first revealed to the world as a manga series in 1989. Written by Riju Sanjo and illustrated by Koji Inada, it ran until 1996 over 37 volumes, and remains one of the best-selling and critically acclaimed manga series of all time.
It also inspired two highly regarded anime series - one which ran in the 1990s, and another which started in 2020. The new game based on the first 41 episodes of this newer series, which charts Dai’s raise from a naïve and inexperienced young man to a true hero.
If you’re a fan of the anime or manga, you’ll delight in seeing your favorite moments presented in a fresh new way and being able to directly control them! But importantly, existing knowledge is not essential because…
It’s intended for new audiences and fans alike
If you’ve never seen or even heard of DRAGON QUEST The Adventure of Dai before, you’re in for a treat because the game retells the story in a way that feels complete and compelling.
You’ll be introduced to the characters and events organically over the course of the story and be able to follow events just as you would reading the original source material. It’s intentionally designed to work as an introduction to The Adventure of Dai - and you’ll no doubt fall in love with its cast and world, just as you would with the series itself.
If you are a fan, of course, you’ll be pleased to know that the game is positively overflowing with fan service, from ‘Bond Memories’, which unlock scenes from the manga, to familiar combat moves taken from the show itself!
The combat is intense and super-stylish
As you’d expect, combat is a big part of Infinity Strash: DRAGON QUEST The Adventure of Dai - and what combat it is!
You’ll use combos, unique abilities and incredible ‘Coup de Grâce’ ultimate attacks to take on all kinds of foes. These can range from classic DRAGON QUEST monsters like Slimes, to the uber-powerful generals of the Dark Army.
Battles are fast paced, challenging, and intensely engaging. You can’t just button-mash your way to victory - you’ll need to learn to block and dodge at the right time and how to best utilize your character’s amazing unique abilities.
With multiple fully playable characters, including the spell-casting Popp, warrior priest Maam and sword-swinging Hyunckel, each with their own distinct playstyles, there’s an enormous level depth to uncover in the combat system.
There’s a satisfying flow to combat that means it never gets old. In fact…
It’s unforgettably replayable
If you fancy a break from the main story, want to test your skills or just earn some valuable loot to strengthen your heroes, they you can head to the Temple of Recollection.
This increasingly difficult mode sends you down floor-by-floor into an ever-evolving dungeon, where no run is ever the same. Each new level of this treacherous temple pits you against increasing challenging encounters - but increasingly valuable rewards. The more dangerous the floor, the greater the rewards it offers.
At regular intervals, you’ll be given the option to leave Temple of Recollection and return to the surface with your winnings. It’s up to you to decide whether to cut and run or gamble your current haul on the promise of what lies beneath. If you fall, you’ll lose everything you earned, but if you make it through, you’ll be rewarded with even more glorious rewards.
It’s a test of skill and bravery, and it changes each time you play so you’re never sure what to expect. It makes for some very compelling action - the pull for ‘just one more run’ is very real.
When you’ve completed the story, you can also try your hand at Challenge Mode.
This opens up new versions of battles from Story Mode, pitting you against stronger opponents, remixed encounters and much more. It’s a true test of everything you’ve learned throughout the story, and some of the most difficult, entertaining and rewarding challenges in the game.
Or, to put it more simply, it’s really fun.
It’s super-stylish
So, you have a compelling story, great characters, a super-fun combat system… what’s the last piece of the puzzle? For Infinity Strash: DRAGON QUEST The Adventure of Dai, it’s a relentless sense of style.
The game is infused with energy and visual pizazz, from the flamboyant finishing moves to the amazing animations and beautiful cel-shaded visuals. It looks like the anime come to life!
