7 ways to get around with style in Square Enix games

Walking? Who wants to do walking? Square Enix games offer loads of other ways to get around with style - here are just some of our favorites!
By Duncan Heaney

Welcome, welcome! We hear you’re in the market for some classy transportation - well, don’t worry because we have you covered.

Here at Square Enix, we offer many ways to traverse the worlds of our games, from awesome automobiles to incredible animals.

Thanks - I’m excited to see what you have to offer!

It’s no problem disembodied voice that is possibly in my head. Allow me to show you just a few of our options:

The Regalia: FINAL FANTASY XV

If you want to travel far and look good while doing it, allow us to present to you the Regalia!

Sleek, sumptuous, and all-round awesome, FINAL FANTASY XV’s automotive marvel is arguably the classiest car in all of gaming. It’s not just a vehicle for Prince Noctis and his entourage - it’s a stalwart companion, as much a part of the team as Ignis, Gladiolus and Prompto.

Ah, so it’s reliable then!

Um… reliable-ish?

Look, we can’t promise it’ll never break down - the game even starts with the team pushing it down the road after it’s conked out. But once Cindy’s worked her magic on it, the Regalia runs like a dream!

It’s a pleasure to drive too - it hugs the road like on rails. At least if Ignis is driving - put Noctis (and by extension me) behind the wheel and there’s always a small chance of a head-on collision. But I’m sure you’ll be fine!

I’m not really sure that black’s my color…

Well then, good news! The Regalia is fully customizable with different paint jobs, decals… the works! Want to make it bubblegum pink or banana yellow? You got it (disclaimer: you may have to go out and find the paint yourself).

That sounds a little inconvenient…

Well, if you want to make it easier, you could always convert the car to the Regalia Type-D and go off-road in an awesome monster truck! Or even take to the skies with the Regalia Type-F!

Wait… it flies?

Yep - and there’s no greater sense of freedom than looking down on the world from your very own flying car!*

(*Please note we take no responsibility for any damage or game overs caused by attempting to land the thing).

But soaring through the clouds isn’t even the best thing about the Regalia!

No? What’s that?

You can blast FINAL FANTASY soundtracks through the stereo as you drive!

Ok, sold!

Wait… we haven’t shown you everything yet!

Totokaku: HARVESTELLA

A Totokaku is so much more than a mount… it’s a companion too.

If you want to make the most of your day, owning a Totokaku is a real boon. Simply hop on its back and this fluffy friend will take you where you need to go quickly… and in the most adorable way possible.

Yes, yes all that’s fine - but there’s a much more important question…

Yes, you can pet the Totokaku!

Amazing! Any downsides to ownership?

Well, it’s important to note that a Totokaku is an investment. You may find you have to spend more than you’d like on food, for example. But if you do remember to feed it, it’ll grow and eventually become more useful.

A bit like children, I suppose.

Ok, sold!

Wait… we still have more to see!

The Grand Terry: OCTOPATH TRAVELER II

Let’s say you have to take to the high seas - what better way to cut through the waves than your very own ship!

The Grand Terry is a beautiful vessel that can be yours in OCTOPATH TRAVELER II - provided you’re able to catch the scent of commerce and find it.

Looks expensive…

Oh, it is! You’ll have to save like crazy to be able to buy this big, beautiful boat. But trust us when we say, it’s worth every cent. Or ‘leaves’ in OCTOPATH currency.

It is undeniably beautiful…

And it can be even more beautiful with a little lick of paint. You can customize the Grand Terry with different colors and add a symbol on the sails. There are some compelling choices – you can have a Sun Emblem, or Trident of the Sea God, for example.

Personally, I think a Black Octopus looks great…

We’ve already established that black’s not my color…

Oh yes, that is something that was said. Internal consistency is important even in something as silly as this article.

Red or Blue it is then - or even unpainted if you want to go au naturel.

Brilliant! I’m sold!

Hold on! There’s yet more!

Ramia: DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D REMAKE

Question: have you ever wanted the feeling of soaring through the skies without a care in the world?

Sure, who hasn’t?

People who are scared of heights, I suppose. But if you’re looking for air-bound freedom, I have a really egg-citing option for you! Ramia from DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D REMAKE!

I’m interested, but suspicious because I noticed the pun…

Ramia is great! This wide-winged bird is big enough for a hero and their entourage to ride in style. It’ll take you anywhere in the world you want to go, so long as there’s somewhere to land, of course.

Egg-citing, right?

There it is again.

Look, I’ll level with you: Ramia requires some personal investment. At first, it’s just an unhatched egg, and you’ll have to brave more than a few dangerous dungeons if you want it to come out of its shell.

It’s worth it though because Ramia is not just an incredible mount, it’s truly iconic.

A legendary ride for a legendary game. I’m in… unless there’s anything else DRAGON QUEST to show me…?

Well actually…

Cetacea: DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition

What’s the best marine mammal?

Um… I’ve never really thought about it. Maybe dolph…

Whales is correct! And what could be better than a divine whale that flies through the sky?

Meet Cetacea, from DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age: Definitive Edition! This fable flying whale of legend will take you and your friends wherever you want to go - even if right into a maelstrom of evil!

I’m not sure I want to go into a maelstrom of evil…

No, but if your heroic duties take you into one, Cetacea has got you covered. She’s a loyal servant of the light after all.

Of course, while she’s fast and reliable, Cetacea does have some limitations when it comes to acting as transport.

Like what?

Well, whales aren’t exactly known for being small and Cetacea’s no exception. Her… ample girth means she can’t exactly drop you off wherever you want to go - instead, you’ll have to find the nearest Whale Way Station and hoof it to your destination from there.

Seems a small price to pay for riding such a noble creature.

Exactly! Cetacea is a literal legend!

What else is there to say? I’m sold!

Wait… we’re not quite there yet.

Balamb Garden - FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered

This next option is also pretty big - and pretty great!

Balamb Garden may seem like a typical school - it has dorms, classrooms, a lovely green space full of carnivorous dinosaurs - you know, the usual stuff.

Wait... what was that about dinosaurs?

However, it also has a secret… it’s mobile!

Yep. Why travel around in a car or on a single animal when you can travel inside an entire facility? This ambulatory academy soars smoothly through the sky, letting you cross rivers and oceans with ease!

I’m still hung up on the dinosaurs…

True, there are plenty of other transport options in FINAL FANTASY VIII. You could rent or take a car , for example, or even soar through the skies in the sleek and svelte Ragnarok airship. But none of them has what Balamb Garden has to offer.

Like, a functional cafeteria for example! Why wait to eat out when you can enjoy one of their famous sausages on the go (assuming they have any left of course). Or an infirmary - perfect if you take a few bumps and scrapes on your journey!

From a carnivorous dinosaur perhaps…

Plus, it’s full of people up for a few hands of the card game Triple Triad!

Wait… Triple Triad? Never mind the dinosaurs, let’s get ready to Shuffle and Boogie! I’m sold!

Hold your horses - we have one more option to show you.

Actually, it’s not horses. It’s better.

Chocobos - the FINAL FANTASY series

What else could it be? It’s the ultimate form of videogame transport!

These fine feathered friends are icons and for good reason. If you need to travel, they’ll put in the wark and get you there fast.

Are we talking any particular chocobo? All the previous things you’ve shown have been a bit more specific…

Yes, but how do you pick a favorite chocobo?

Declaring one ‘the best’ would be an impossible task, like picking a favorite child - even if you have one, you shouldn't admit it publicly.

There are so many choco-options and they’re all great in their own right. Do you go for a brilliant buddy like FINAL FANTASY V’s Boko? The regal majesty of FINAL FANTASY XVI’s Ambrosia? Heck, even Choco from Chocobo GP could be in the mix - you can’t ride him, but he’d probably lend you his skates if you asked nicely.

When it comes to chocobos, there are no wrong options. Plus, some have special abilities!

Like what?

Well, in FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH, for example, different breeds have different skills. For example, Grey Chocobos can scale sheer rock faces with their strong talons, while Aqua Chocobos can glide over water on a powerful jet!

That sounds fun!

It is! Especially when you dress them up in new outfits and colors! What’s better than a chocobo? A chocobo in a cowboy hat!

This is undeniable.

Yep - you can’t go wrong with a chocobo.

Well, it goes without saying but…

You’re sold?

Actually, you’ve given me a lot to ponder, so I’ll go think about it. (FAST TRAVELS AWAY)

Hold on… if you already have fast travel unlocked why do you even need transport? What even was the point of all this?
