DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince

Square Enix locations we’d actually like to live in

From FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH to STAR OCEAN THE SECOND STORY R, we pick the towns in Square Enix games we’d move into if we could.
By Duncan Heaney

You’ve probably spent many hours saving the worlds of various Square Enix games, but have you ever thought about living in them?

Our rich and detailed locales are full of cities, towns and village, many of which are so beautiful and richly detailed that you almost want to move in yourself.

That got us thinking: if you could live anywhere in a Square Enix game, where would it be? With that in mind, here are seven of the settlements in Square Enix games that we think you could legitimately live in (if… y’know, they weren’t fictional).

Nemea Town - HARVESTELLA

Spring is the best season, and I won’t hear any arguments otherwise.

The plants are blooming, temperatures are on the rise without becoming sweltering, and there’s new life everywhere you look. It’s all rather inspiring. That’s why there’s no place I’d rather live in HARVESTELLA than Nemea Town.

This is a town of perpetual Spring. Beautiful cherry blossoms line its streets, framing its beautiful white buildings. It’s well protected thanks to the spear-wielding Asyl and the Argus Brigade. It’s full of loving people, who help run the very wholesome orphanage.

And the food. Oh man, the food! Nemea Bolognese, Zucchini and mince sandwiches, Peach Rose Mousse… I’m drooling just thinking about it all.

Time for some shameless pictures of food? I think so:

Rosehill - DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince

Rosehill is a modest settlement, but if you’ve played DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince, you know it’s much more than that.

This is a safe space that you’ll return to time and time throughout the adventure. It's the place where your monsters reside in a paddock, and also where you can synthesize new monsters at Rosehill Tower.

Add some truly charming human residents and you have something that’s far more than a town or village. It’s a home.

Haven - FINAL FANTASY XVI

FINAL FANTASY XVI’s world of Valisthea can be a harsh and brutal place.

Bearers, people born with the ability to use magic, are persecuted and enslaved, and the encroaching Blight drives nations into bloody wars. And even though Clive Rosfield and his allies work towards a better future, they know things will get worse before they get better.

That’s why Haven makes such an impression. Located in the Northern Territories, it’s home to unspoiled nature, a thriving ecosystem and clean water - the ideal place for a settlement. It’s also untouched by the conflicts that plague the rest of the realm thanks to a magical glamour that conceals it from view.

It contains a close-knit population who work together to support and protect their community - and where even Bearers are treated equally. In an often unkind world, it’s a real ray of light.

Bath Vegas - FOAMSTARS

Now this is what I call a party town! Well, technically, a party city.

Bath Vegas is the home of the fabled FOAMSMASH tournament - where the world’s best, brightest and… um, foamiest get together to compete in numerous high-octane competitions.

If I moved there, would I have a shot of becoming a FOAMSTAR? Probably not - sometimes I can’t even walk through a door without missing. Even so, Bath Vegas would be great - the scenery is stunning, the music scene is incredible (seriously - stream the soundtrack if you haven’t) and there’s always an awesome match to watch.

Living in Bath Vegas wouldn’t be a peaceful life, but boy it would be fun!

Cropdale - OCTOPATH TRAVELER II

Now if it’s a peaceful life you want, you won’t find better than Cropdale.

Nestled in the wooded Leaflands, this charming settlement is quiet, friendly and quite beautiful. Not only is it full of supportive people, such as Agnea’s family, it’s also relatively safe - while not without dangers, the local fauna is less malicious than some other parts of OCTOPATH TRAVELER II’s world of Solistia.

Not only that, but the eating’s good too - Cropdale has the best raspberries and peaches around! Fan of raspberry pie? This place has the best around. It even has a local festival, where the village gets together to eat, drink and enjoy each other’s company.

So, while there are more spectacular settlements in Solistia, such as the shining city of New Delsta, there are few locations as charmingly wholesome.

Lacuer City - STAR OCEAN THE SECOND STORY R

On the other end of the scale to Cropdale, we have STAR OCEAN THE SECOND STORY R’s vibrant Lacuer.

It’s the largest city on the planet Expel and full of awesome things to see. It has a top class hotel, a great tavern, a massive library and even a castle. Plus if you’re into your weapons - and considering the monster-filled world it’s in you probably should be - there are loads of different weapons shops to browse. Those in the know may also of some super-skilled artisans there too.

Best of all though, each year Lacuer hosts the Armory Contest - a hot ticket whether you’re competing or just sitting in the stands to watch.

With all that, and even more to see and do, I don’t think I’d ever get bored of living in Laceur.

Kalm - FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH

FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH has no shortage of towns so vibrant and well-realized that any of them could be on this list.

For fun in the sun, it’s hard to beat the sun-kissed beaches and party vibes of Costa del Sol. Does the Gold Saucer count as a town, because the good times never stop there? And if you asked for someone’s recommendation to get away from it all? Me? Gongaga.

But upon careful consideration, I think the best place to live would be Kalm - a town that, save for the occasional visit from Shinra, lives up to its name.

It’s got beautiful architecture, bustling shops, live music from visiting artists and - most importantly - a thriving Queen’s Blood scene. What more could you want?

Those were just a few of the most livable towns and cities in Square Enix games, but we’re sure you have thoughts of your own. Let us know on social media where you wish you could take up residence:

DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince - Everything you need to know

The monstrous new RPG is out now for Nintendo Switch. Learn all the details here, including story, gameplay and more!
By Duncan Heaney

Do you have what it takes to become the master of monsterkind?

That’s the challenge you face in DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince - out now for Nintendo Switch. This brand-new entry in the beloved series sends the titular dark prince, Psaro, across fantastical worlds full of weird and wonderful creatures, quirky characters and ever-changing seasons.

You can get a taste of what to expect in the new trailer or read on and we’ll tell you everything you need to know about this monstrous new RPG!

What’s the story of DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: THE DARK PRINCE?

The new game puts you in the capable shoes of Psaro - a young man who is cursed by his father, the Master of Monsterkind, to be unable to harm any creature with monster blood.

The adventure proper starts in the tranquil town of Rosehill, where monsters and dwarves live together in harmony. It’s there that Psaro will learn the ways of monster wrangling - he may not be able to directly harm a monster, but he can make other monsters do the job for him!

Of course, to become a world-class wrangler, he needs training - and that’s where Fizzy comes in. This effervescent expert in monster wrangling offers guidance and words of wisdom, as Psaro sets off to explore the plains of the human world to battle local monsters and gain valuable experience

When his training is complete, the kind-hearted Monty - something of a father figure for Psaro - suggests that he head to Endor Colosseum to test his skills in a Monster Megabrawl.

Psaro (and by extension you) will need to make use of your monsters’ many skills, from DRAGON QUEST staples like Sizz and Whoosh, to powerful restorative spells.

Winning in the Colosseum leads Psaro to meet Rose - a kind-hearted Elven girl with the special ability to reach the monster realm of Nadiria. Each echelon of this dark and dangerous realm is full of fascinating monsters and fearsome fights. And in the distance of the Circle of Conquest is the Maulosseum, where Nadiria’s greatest monster wranglers gather to do battle…

Does Psaro have what it takes to compete with the best? And what else does his adventure have in store?

You’ll have to play to find out…

What do you do in DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince?

As you may expect, this game tasks you with scouting numerous monsters from around the world, and then taking them into battle - either by commanding them directly or letting them fight it out on their own with auto-battle.

On your quest to find ever-more marvellous monsters, you’ll explore the fantastical environments of Nadiria. These sprawling lands are as varied as they are beautiful - and they’re ever-changing. As the seasons pass, so too do the landscapes - for example, you may find previously inaccessible areas become possible to traverse depending on the current conditions.

What’s more, certain monsters will only appear during specific seasons - so there’s plenty of opportunity for a keen-eyed Monster Wrangler to build their army!

Of course, scouting is only one way to get new monsters - you can also use synthesis. By combining multiple monsters, you can create entirely new additions to your party - and their skills and traits can carry over, resulting in some wonderfully unique rosters.

In fact, the synthesis system in DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince is the deepest it’s ever been, with a staggering number potential results and more intuitive combinations!

Of course, the true test of a monster wrangler is the combat, and you should expect fast-paced, strategic turn-based encounters. You can issue precise orders to each monster, or set general tactics for the party such as ‘Show no Mercy’ or ‘Focus on healing’ and let them make the moment to moment decisions - either way, your tactics and the makeup of your party will mean the difference between defeat and victory.

What about online modes?

When you’ve built a good party, and progressed the story sufficiently, you can talk to Fizzy and take the fight to others with multiple online modes.

You can battle other players directly in Ranked Matches - and as you rise through the ranks, you’ll earn valuable rewards like rare accessories. Or, if you’re up for friendlier competition, you can play Friend matches against registered pals. No ranking worries here - just a friendly match between pals. Alternatively, up to eight players can go head-to-head in knockout Multiplayer Tournaments!

You can also take part in Quickfire Contests. These are massive competitions that use the data of 30 players to conduct battles automatically in the blink of an eye. Not only will you be able to see how your team stacks up against others, but you’ll also earn valuable rewards and items that can raise your monsters' stats!

There’s also an online shop, which lets you spend the gold you earn in-game to buy special items, accessories and more. The Online Shop has different stock according to the day of the week (meaning real-world days, rather than in-game days!), but the items available can also change as you progress through the story. Stock changes regularly, so it’s worth checking in daily to see what’s new.

Wait… Psaro… why does that sound familiar?

We suspect some long-time DRAGON QUEST fans may be asking themselves that question. Indeed, You may recognize Psaro, Rose and a few other familiar faces from the classic DRAGON QUEST IV: Chapters of the Chosen. In fact, there’s some wonderful fan service to discover in the game - but we’ll let you discover that for yourselves.

Of course, if you’re not familiar with DRAGON QUEST IV, don’t worry - the game’s story is self-contained. It’s a completely standalone experience, so you’ll be able to follow the events and characters just as you would with any other game.

How many monsters are in the game and which ones are they?

There are more than 500 monsters to scout and battle in DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince, from iconic series mainstays like the humble slime and dracky to brand new monsters never before seen in the series!

In fact, the first decision you’ll make after you start the game and can move freely (other than your name) is which one to start with. You’ll either get:

  • Platypunk - A scheming monster from the beast family. The Naturalist talent provides it with abilities to weaken opponents.

  • Fright Bulb - A plant-like monster from the slime family. The Soothesayer talent enables it to cast a variety of healing and support spells.

  • Mud Mannequin - A monster in the material family that's made of mud. It can learn a range of dances from the Dancer talent.

  • Cruelcumber - An animated vegetable from the nature family. The Blowy Slasher talent teaches it wind-elemental spells and abilities.

All awesome, all iconic and all just the tip of the iceberg. You’ll find plenty more in the full game.

7 awesome things in the DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince demo

From starter monsters to synthesis, we take a look at some of the coolest features in the DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince demo
By Duncan Heaney

DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince is just weeks away! This highly anticipated monster wrangling adventure launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch on December 1, 2023… but you don’t have to wait that long to play it.

A demo is available now, and it lets you play through the opening hours of the game. You’ll play through the start of the story, discover how Psaro takes his first steps on his quest to become a monster wrangler, and perhaps even the Master of Monsterkind!

It’s a massive demo with hours of playtime - and your monsters in your party will carry over to the full game! Here’s just a few things you can look forward to getting up to:

You’ll choose a starter monster

You can’t be a monster wrangler if you don’t have a monster, and the first big decision you’ll have in the demo is receiving your very first.

The monster caretaker Monty will ask you some probing questions about the type of monsters you like. Depending on your answers, you’ll be given one of the following new friends:

  • Platypunk
  • Mud Mannequin
  • Cruelcumber
  • Fright Bulb

Be honest and you’ll get a monster that matches your preferences. For example, I got a Cruelcumber - and I couldn’t be happier!

Don’t worry if you want something beyond those choices though - you’ll be out in the world and ready to scout for more monsters in minutes!

You’ll explore regions across two worlds

Before long, the game will let you loose in your first area: Terrestria Plains. This large area is a verdant land filled with rolling hills, roaring streams, dense woods, and monsters just waiting to be recruited.

You could theoretically lose hours scouting, battling, and exploring this vast region, but you’d only scratch the surface of what’s available in the demo. Continue your adventure, and you’ll also uncover loads of other areas to explore, from the paddock where your monsters are kept, your home base in Rosehill Tower and your first coliseum.

But that’s just the human world. From Rosehill Tower, you can also descend into the demon world of Nadiria. Here, you’ll discover new areas to explore, such as the massive Circle of Conquest - where lightning bolts illuminate the sky and poison swamps hide secrets.

Those aren’t the only locations, of course. This is a big, generous demo full of characters and places we can’t wait for you to discover. Who knows what treasures you may find…?

You’ll witness the changing of the seasons… and the world

The world of DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince is ever-changing - it moves through the seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Each season is more than just an aesthetic change - it alters the landscape itself.

For example, in Spring flowers may bloom, in Summer, plant life flourishes and creates new paths. When Fall comes, the weather turns and the trees lose their leaves, and Winter freezes the rivers, allowing you to walk right over them. Also, different monsters appear depending on the season, so you might want to revisit some areas as the seasons change.

You’ll get to see the effect of the different seasons in the demo, so be sure to look around for new paths and new opportunities to find useful items and monsters!

You’ll take on iconic monsters…

Each of the large, open areas in the demo are absolutely packed full of monsters - from icons like the humble Slime and Dracky, to more weird and wonderful creations from throughout the series, like the brilliantly named Woebergine and Capsichums.

When you run into one of these monsters, you’ll enter a battle! You have four spaces for monsters in your active party (bigger monsters may take up multiple spaces) and set tactics on how they should behave in the fracas to come. For example, tell a monster to ‘Show No Mercy’ and they’ll hit their foe with everything they have. Or set ‘Focus on Healing’ and they’ll do everything they can to keep the rest of the party hale and hearty.

If you want more precise control, you can even give them orders to use specific moves on specific enemies. Whatever the approach, you’ll be rewarded with Exp and items to strengthen your monsters and let them take on even greater foes!

…or add them to the team

But of course, DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince isn’t only about battling monsters - it’s about recruiting them! The areas in the demo alone are teeming with dozens of monsters that you can add to your menagerie.

Getting them to join the party is easier said than done though. There are multiple ways to scout monsters. You could leave it to luck and wait for your foe to ask to join you after a battle or Scout it and persuade it to join the team. There are other ways to get monsters too…

You’ll synthesize your way to success

Progress far enough in the demo, and you’ll unlock the ability to Synthesize monsters.

This monster wrangling mainstay lets you combine two monsters together to create an entirely new one. You’ll be able to create some very powerful creations, and even inherit talents to make your creations even more capable!

Synthesis is the key to building a powerful party - and it’s also just fun to experiment with! Even in the demo, you’ll be able to discover some intriguing combinations…

You may even conquer your first tournaments

When you’ve built a strong party, you’ll be able to take them into tournaments. Some tournaments are featured as part of the story, such as the Endor Colosseum, where you’ll be able to test your monsters’ strength and face adversaries of increasing strength. And don’t forget to visit the Maulosseum in Nadiria to face off against fiendish foes!

Tournaments are a fantastic test for your party and monster wrangling skills. Will you enter with a powerful team of big hitters, or play a subtler game and equip monsters with healing skills and debuffs? The choice is yours…

Those were just seven awesome things you can expect to do in the DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince demo. It’s free to download, so go try it for yourselves!

How to take the fight online in DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince

Who says monster wrangling is a solo activity? In this article, we reveal some of the ways you can take DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince online.
By Duncan Heaney

We’re less than a month away from the release of DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince! From December 1, 2023, you’ll be let loose into a vast world, full of monsters, mysteries, and ever-changing seasons.

In our last preview we gave you an overview of the monster wrangling gameplay and exciting combat (read that here). Today, we wanted to take a look into the many game modes that you can enjoy via an internet connection.

As you’d hope, online matches are available in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince. There’s also a new mode called Quickfire Contests, which use your party’s data to conduct automatic battles.

There’s something here for all types of players - so let’s dig into it!

How to get online

In true DRAGON QUEST style, every aspect of DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince is bursting with charm. Even something as simple as getting online is brimming with wit and style.

Your character, Psaro, is helped on his adventure by the mysterious Fizzy. This adorable ally isn’t just an expert at monster wrangling - she’s an internet whiz too! When you speak to her at Rosehill Tower, she’ll show you all the online options available to you!

Those options are Online Battles, Quickfire Contests, and the Online Shop. If you perform well in Online Battles and Quickfire Contests, you can earn rewards that include new monsters and rare items.

At the Online Shop, you can spend your gold coins earned in the main game to obtain items like scrolls, which teach new Talents to your monsters. Whether you want to put your skills to the test or simply do a little shopping, there are plenty of ways to improve as a monster wrangler!

Now we’ll take a closer look at each of these options:

Online battles

Online battles let you pit your monsters against other players’ in thrilling battles! There are several different battle categories to choose from:

Ranked Matches

Ranked Matches pit you against other players from around the globe as you compete to take the top spot in the rankings. By rising through the ranks, you can earn rare accessories and other items to make your monsters stronger!

Friend Matches

Looking for something a little less competitive? In Friend Matches, you play for fun against other wranglers whom you've registered as friends. No need to worry about ranking up, just a friendly competition between chums. It’s a great way to test out your party before you head for the big leagues!

Multiplayer Tournaments

Up to eight players can clash in a knockout format. Fight your friends, rumble with your rivals and don’t stop until you reach the top!

Quickfire Contests

Quickfire Contests are a fast and easy way to strengthen your party, recruit new monsters and earn useful items!

Once you register your party’s data, you can compete in Quickfire Contests.

These are massive competitions that use the data of 30 players to conduct battles automatically in the blink of an eye. As well as seeing where your team stacks up against the competition, you’ll earn valuable rewards!

You can only earn rewards from a Quickfire Contest once per day, but they include items that can raise your monsters' stats, as well as identical monsters (B Rank and below only) from any teams you defeat over the course of the competition.

After a contest, you can view the details of each battle, as well as use your opponents' party data to conduct Sparring Matches for practice. Use this information to improve your party composition and tweak your tactics!

Online Shop

Got a pocket full of gold? Don’t hoard it - spend it! The Online Shop has something of value for all types of monster wranglers: special scrolls that can teach a new Talent to a monster, many powerful accessories, as well as a selection of delectable meats available!

The Online Shop has different stock according to the day of the week (and to be clear, we’re talking real-world days, rather than in-game days), and the items available can also change as you progress through the story. Be sure to check back regularly and, again, try not to let all that gold burn a hole in your pocket!

As you can see, online functionality adds a lot to DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince. We hope you enjoy the wider world of battles beyond the main story… and the rewards that come with them.

You can experience it all from December 1, 2023, when DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince releases for Nintendo Switch.

The combat of DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince

We take a look at the ins and outs of combat, synthesizing monsters and more in the upcoming monster-wrangling RPG.
By Duncan Heaney

DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince is a grand adventure, but also a dangerous one. The protagonist, Psaro, has been cursed and is unable to directly harm anything with monster blood as a result.

Fortunately, there is a solution: become a monster wrangler. Psaro is able to recruit a vast selection of different monsters and use their talents and skills to overcome foes, beat rivals and rise to the top in his quest to become the Master of Monsterkind.

But how does combat work? In this preview, we’ll take a look at the basics of combat, some of the ways to recruit new monsters, synthesis and much more!

The basics of combat

As a monster wrangler, you’ll build a team of monsters to battle against your enemies as you progress through the adventure.

Your active team can have up to eight members at a time - up to four in your main party and four more in your reserves.

During battle you can issue precise orders to each individual monster, or set general tactics, such as 'Show No Mercy' or 'Focus on Healing' and leave your monsters themselves to decide the specifics.

Despite your best efforts, sometimes the enemy will get on the back foot, and make victory seem like a distant dream.

Should this happen, your monsters may enter a frenzied state out of sheer desperation! Not only will they inflict greater damage, they’ll gain additional opportunities to act, letting you to turn a certain defeat into a famous triumph!

Getting new monsters

There are many ways to grow your roster of monsters. For example, you could leave it to luck and wait for an enemy monster to ask to join you after battle… but there are far more efficient methods than that!

Let’s say you run into a strong-looking enemy that you fancy having in your team. You could hit it with a ‘Show of Force’ and try to persuade it to join you. With clever use of your items, such as meat-based goodies and other treats, you can increase the likelihood of a monster wanting to join you, as well as improve the persuasiveness of your ‘Show of Force’.

Put your items to good use to recruit the monsters you want.

You may also meet other wranglers on your journey who are willing to combine their monsters with yours to create a brand-new creature - one they'll even let you keep!

Synthesis

Those methods are all well and good, but a true monster wrangler’s favorite way to improve their team is through synthesis, which lets you combine two monsters to create a new one.

The synthesis system has been overhauled for DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince, and now features combinations that will make sense even to series newcomers. It’s the most intuitive system that the series has ever seen!

For example, combine the toothy Great Sabrecat with the bird-like Garuda and you’ll get a powerful Missing Lynx!

Monster talents

Each monster comes with at least one talent. This is a set of spells and abilities that you gradually unlock by assigning the talent points a monster earns through levelling up or other means.

There are three broad categories of talent, and each one contains a mix of skills, magic spells, attribute boosters and more. When a child monster is synthesised, it comes with its own innate talent, but can also inherit talents from its parents. Understanding this is the key to creating powerful monsters.

There are numerous talents to be acquired in the game. Some provide life-saving healing spells, while others can turn a monster into a powerhouse or a damage sponge. A selection of talents are even named after some very familiar monsters. For example:

Talent Focus: Cure-All

With potent healing spells, such as Multiheal and Omniheal, as well as Zing to revive your allies and Kabuff to boost their defense, the 'Cure-All' talent is a must-have for your party's healer.

Talent Focus: The Dragonlord

Devastating fiery breath attacks, such as Inferno and Hellitosis, and the debilitating Burning Breath and Wave of Panic, combine with the spells Moreheal and Kasizzle to make 'The Dragonlord' a fearsome talent that's worthy of the name.

Family traits

Each monster type has its own unique set of traits - latent abilities that can boost attributes or disrupt your enemy's plans. New ones are unlocked automatically when your monsters reach a certain level.

A monster's size affects the number of traits at its disposal, with large monsters able to acquire more.

Speaking of monster sizes…

Sizes and ranks

Monsters come in two different sizes in DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince: small or large.

Small monsters take up one slot in your team roster, while large monsters require two slots. This means you could, for example, have a party of four small monsters, two large ones, or two small and one large. Not only do large monsters have higher attributes than their small counterparts, they can also act multiple times per round during battle.

As well as the size, monsters are assigned one of nine ranks: G, F, E, D, C, B, A, S or X, from lowest to highest.

The rank is attached to the monster's type and can't be changed. Among the Rank S monsters you'll find many familiar antagonists from the series, but the most fiendishly powerful monsters exclusively occupy Rank X.

Testing your mettle in the battle arenas of two worlds

As Psaro's adventure takes shape, two battle areas, where you can test your monsters' might, become available: the Endor Colosseum in the human world of Terrestria, and the Maulosseum in the monster realm of Nadiria.

In these arenas, every opponent is an expert monster wrangler in their own right! Can you overcome them all and raise an army capable of toppling the Master of Monsterkind himself?

Meet some of the monsters

Finally, let’s take a look at some of the monsters you’ll encounter in DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince. The game features more than 500 monsters to befriend, including Jasper Unbound and Krystalinda from DRAGON QUEST XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age.

Naturally, there will also be a selection of brand-new monsters you've never seen before.

Jasper Unbound

The former general of a famous kingdom who succumbed to his own dark ambitions and transformed into a monster.

Krystalinda

An ice witch who was magically sealed inside a forbidden book in ancient times.

Greater Platypunk

A fluffy monster from the beast family that is widely considered a king among platypunks.

Gander

A monster from the demon family that appears before dying creatures to witness their final moments.

A new look at DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince

Get a sneak peek at the heroes, story, and world of DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince.
By Duncan Heaney

Last month, we revealed DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince. This monstrous new RPG casts you as a monster wrangler, who must scout monsters and use them in battle in order to become the Master of Monsterkind.

Read about it here:

Today, we’re going to go a little deeper and give you a sneak peek at the heroes of the story, the world in which their marvellous adventure plays out, and some of the game's main features.

The Story of DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince

This new adventure follows Psaro - a name that DRAGON QUEST fans may remember from DRAGON QUEST IV: Chapters of the Chosen (although since this game is completely standalone, so it doesn’t matter if you don’t).

Poor Psaro is cursed by his own father, the ruler of the monster realm of Nadiria, and rendered incapable of harming any creature of monster blood.

In defiance, Psaro becomes a monster wrangler and soon commands his very own army of loyal monster minions. On his quest for revenge against his father, he meets Rose, a young elvish woman, and a mysterious man who goes by the name of Toilen Trubble. Together they head off to face the perils awaiting them in Nadiria.

Psaro's ultimate goal is vengeance, but he'll need to befriend many monsters and tread many dark paths before he's capable of fulfilling that ambition.

The characters of DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince

As you’d expect from a game bearing the DRAGON QUEST name, this monster-wrangling adventure is filled with colorful characters. Let’s introduce some of the main players:

Psaro

  • Voiced by: Gwilym Lee

Psaro is the main protagonist of the story. He’s a young demihuman, whose silver hair and red eyes make him instantly recognisable.

He sets out to become a monster wrangler in order to defeat his father, the Master of Monsterkind.

Rose

  • Voiced by: Emma Ballantine

Rose is an invaluable ally to Psaro, who joins him on his forays into Nadiria and uses her mystical elven powers to reveal the path through this foreboding land.

Rose is a gentle, kind-hearted soul, but unafraid to stand up for what she believes in.

Toilen Trubble

  • Voiced by: Hyoie O'Grady

A young researcher of magic with a self-confessed propensity for five-finger discounts, Toilen joins Psaro to scour Nadiria for magical ingredients not found in the human world.

He's known to get more than a little excitable at the prospect of finding rare items.

Fizzy

  • Voiced by: Harriet Carmichael

This cheeky creature has made it her life's mission to seek out the best and brightest monster wranglers of the world. Fizzy becomes something of a mentor to Psaro, and teaches him the basics of monster wrangling.

The Varied Vistas of Nadiria

Much of the story in DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince takes place in Nadiria - an underworld domain where monsters reign supreme.

Nadiria is divided into a number of realms, called 'Circles', with each one comprised of three separate areas: a lower, middle and upper echelon.

Here's the Circle of Temper:

The Circle of Indulgence:

A world that changes with the seasons

Even in Nadiria, time marches on, and the seasons cycle in familiar fashion. As the seasons change, so too does the landscape - and the monsters that inhabit it. A new time of year brings with it fresh discoveries and more monsters to befriend.

Meet the monsters

DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince is the newest game in the DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS series. As tradition dictates, the main character is adept at forming powerful bonds with the monsters they meet. These monster allies will join the hero on their adventure, fighting in their stead against the enemies they encounter.

In that sense, this game is no different. But unlike his predecessors, Psaro is under the influence of a curse, placed upon him by his father, the ruler of Nadiria. As a result, he’s unable to harm any creature of monster blood himself.

Psaro resolves to become a monster wrangler, training up his team of monsters or creating new ones through the power of synthesis.

With over 500 different types of monster, and a revamped synthesis system, there are brand-new monster combinations to discover and many familiar friends - and arch enemies - from other titles in the DRAGON QUEST series to create. And with the game's online capabilities, you can now do battle with monster wranglers the world over.

But let’s introduce a few of the monsters who will make their first appearance in DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince.

Goomulonimbus

These sneaky slimes summon thunderstorms and gales from the comfort of their cloud.

Vegandragora

This dragon maintains a symbiotic relationship with the flower that sprouts from its head.

Ronin Raccoon

This monster peers deep into the psyche of its foes to determine how best to strike them down.

Release date DLC

Three sets of DLC will go on sale to coincide with the release of the main game: The Mole Hole, Coach Joe's Dungeon Gym, and Treasure Trunks! Progress through this additional content to earn rewards that will help you on your quest, as well as new outfits for Psaro to wear. Content will be available to purchase from Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch.

The Mole Hole

Delve underground for a reunion with monster types you've befriended once before. You'll also have the opportunity to scout monsters that are otherwise very tricky to synthesise. This DLC ncludes the 'gothic vestment' outfit.

Coach Joe's Dungeon Gym

Explore these randomly generated dungeons and battle legions of powerful monsters. Each dungeon comes with unique requirements that require players to carefully assess and construct their party. Dispatch the boss that awaits in the final room to earn rare items that will aid you in raising ever-stronger allies. This DLC includes the 'cake-maker's clobber' outfit.

Treasure Trunks

Every time you open these mysterious treasure chests, you'll obtain an exciting reward. However, you'll have to wait a little while before you can open the chest up again and obtain the next exciting reward on the list! Keep opening them and you're guaranteed to get your hands on some very enticing items indeed! This DLC includes the 'monstrous mail' outfit.

We hope you enjoyed that brief preview of DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Dark Prince.

The game launches for Nintendo Switch on December 1, 2023 and is available to preorder now physically from the Square Enix Store (digital preorders will go live at a later date):
